The client

A long-established Worcestershire-based wholesale nursery, regarded as one of the UK’s leading specialist producers of clematis and climbing plants. The business supplies garden centres, landscapers and retailers nationally. System Force IT has provided their managed IT and IT support services since 2019.

The issue

The administration office sits inside an insulated building within the glasshouses where the plants are grown. Even with insulation, the structure of the surrounding glasshouse made the office very hot in summer and very cold in winter.

The extreme heat was not just a staff-comfort issue. It was causing the on-premises server to overheat, with the obvious downstream risk of unplanned outage, hardware failure and data loss in a business that relies on its order and stock systems daily.

The directors wanted a single, properly engineered solution that would deliver a comfortable working environment for staff and a safe operating environment for the server, all year round, within a 120 sq ft office footprint.

In a small office inside a glasshouse, the server was failing the heat test before the staff were.

The solution

The job was put out to tender. After site visits and a scoping exercise, two System Force engineers specified a three-unit heat-pump air conditioning solution capable of cooling and heating the office across the full UK temperature range.

Technical detail

Equipment: Fujitsu multi-head heat-pump air conditioning unit.
Layout: condenser positioned externally on the building; three head units inside the office; refrigerant pipework run in a conduit tray to each indoor head.
Power: specialist electrician engaged for the electrical install, with all work compliant and certified.
Disruption: three-day install carried out around staff who continued working in the office throughout; mess and disruption kept to a minimum.

Server-room temperatures kept within safe operating range during a UK heatwave that reached 40°C externally.
