Microsoft is ending the ‘Classic’ Microsoft Teams Free version from April 12th 2023, with no direct route for migrating to their new Microsoft Teams (free).
For users who want to retain their chats, meetings and files, Microsoft is recommending upgrading to Teams Essentials. This keeps everything intact as well as providing unlimited group meetings up to 30 hours long, up to 300 participants per meeting and 10GB of cloud storage per user.
For users who want to consider upgrading their team productivity, upgrading to a Microsoft 365 Business Basic not only maintains all your existing Teams data but also gives Teams meetings with transcripts, web and mobile versions of Microsoft 365 Apps, ability to manage customer appointments with Bookings and 1TB of cloud storage per user.
But for consumers or small business users who prefer to continue using a free version of Microsoft Teams, they will need to sign up (again) for Microsoft Teams (free). This will give unlimited group meetings for up to 60 minutes, up to 100 participants per meeting and 5GB of cloud storage per user. However, it will not keep all current data. Existing files will need to be exported by opening Microsoft Teams, selecting ‘Files’ and clicking the ellipses on the file to be download to your device. After April 12th 2023 all data will deleted and you will lose access to Teams Free (Classic).
