What temperature should my server and comms room be?

The right temperatures are essentials for every server or comms room. This is because of the sophisticated devices that are housed inside. These devices include switches, routers, storage devices, firewalls, servers, computers, DSL routers, database servers etc. To maintain the right temperatures, you are required to meet all the requirement for air conditioning. A good air-conditioned environment needs to have an air conditioner and the right sensors to trigger an action whenever temperatures are lower or higher than the recommended levels.

According to several experts recommend server room temperature should be between 10°C (50°F) and 28°C (82°F). In case the temperature is out of this range, then you are at a risk of equipment getting damaged or lowering their performance.

Computer networking equipment is designed to function well within a given range of temperatures. Therefore, to ensure optimum, reliable and longer life of this equipment you need to keep the server room within this range of recommended temperatures.

A loss that can be caused by wrong server room temperatures is the amount of money that you would lose in case your server went down. Just imagine the cost of replacing damaged part or devices, also think about a lost e-commerce business where you lose all the customer details, including wasted staff time and all the other involved costs.

Recommended environments for data centres and server rooms

Today the demand for data is increasing rapidly. Everyone is consulting the internet with different queries and expects to get a response as soon as possible. This data is stored in data centres which consist of one or more server rooms. A data centre is an infrastructure that is designed to house computer networking equipment. To get the optimum performance, a data centre environment needs to be maintained by making sure that all the environmental conditions are met. This includes:

Humidity – this is the amount of moisture in the air at a given temperature. The recommended humidity level is between 45.0% and 55.0%. If the relative humidity is high, then water condensation is likely to occur which can result in corrosion of equipment and early failure of components. On the other hand, if it is too low, then the components are likely to have electrostatic discharge (ESD) which often cause the damage of some of the sensitive components.

Temperatures – this is the quantity or the intensity of heat present. The recommended temperature is between 10°C (50°F) and 28°C (82°F). In case of higher temperatures, the equipment is likely to overheat hence causing a thermal shutdown and / or potentially reducing the lifetime of the sensitive components. Lower temperature causes more power consumption to bring up the required environmental temperatures.
