Can You Trust the Answer? AI Hallucinations at Work

Artificial intelligence tools are genuinely useful, and they are also very good at something unexpected: being confidently wrong. Ask a question and you may get a fluent, authoritative, entirely plausible answer that happens to be false. In the industry this is called a “hallucination”, and for businesses starting to lean on AI, it is a risk worth understanding.

What is an AI hallucination?

Large language models like ChatGPT do not “know” facts the way a database does. They predict the most likely next words based on patterns in their training. Most of the time that produces something correct and helpful. Sometimes it produces something that sounds right but is not: an invented statistic, a made-up quote, a legal case that never existed, a product feature that was never real. The catch is that the wrong answer arrives with exactly the same confidence as the right one.

Why it matters for your business

The danger is not the technology, it is trusting it blindly. Real examples are piling up: professionals who submitted documents citing court cases their AI had simply invented, businesses that published incorrect figures, and customer-facing replies that confidently stated things which were untrue. For a small business the consequences can be reputational, financial, or in regulated work, legal. A confident wrong answer that reaches a customer or a decision is worse than no answer at all.

Using AI without getting caught out

The answer is not to avoid AI. It is to use it with a clear head about what it is good and bad at:

  • Keep a person in the loop. Treat AI output as a well-informed first draft, never a final, unchecked authority.
  • Always verify facts, figures, names and quotes against a reliable source before they go anywhere important.
  • Match the tool to the task. Drafting an email, summarising a document or brainstorming is low-risk. Giving legal, financial, medical or compliance answers is high-risk and needs human expertise.
  • Prefer tools that cite their sources, so you can check where an answer came from.
  • Tell your team. Everyone using AI at work should understand that it can be wrong, and know when to double-check.
