What an hour of downtime really costs

The calculator counts two things: the idle time of the people who cannot work, and any revenue you lose while systems are down. Plug in your own numbers and the figure often surprises people. As illustrative examples, using the calculator’s own maths:

• A small office of ten people loses around £300 an hour in idle staff time alone, so a single half-day offline is about £1,200.
• A Gloucestershire manufacturer or distributor, where production or dispatch stops, can lose closer to £2,840 an hour. A single morning offline can top £11,000.

These are deliberately conservative. They count only idle staff and lost revenue, not the overtime to catch up, the reputational hit or any lost data, which usually make the real figure higher.
